Refuse To Be Lazy – Use This Time Wisely

Refuse to be lazyRefuse to be Lazy

I realize this pandemic, when many are quarantined at home, can be a time to do not too much of anything. My attitude is that it’s a great time to refuse to be lazy!

Binge-watching Netflicks and doing jigsaw puzzles come to mind and have been confessed by friends, but today my challenge to you is to use this time and turn it into a gift of time.

What is it you have wanted to do, learn or accomplish as soon as you managed to find some spare time?  Do it now! Refuse to be lazy! Use this time to learn to play an instrument, read “Gone with the Wind” again or do some exercising at home to get in better shape!

Using this time well and refusing to become a lazy person will also help you develop your will power once we are at the other side of this period. It’s so easy to just not do something and let an opportunity slip by. Admittedly, it’s much more difficult to take decisive action, but the results can be so rewarding.

Refusing to be lazy takes work and discipline, and it’s a habit to develop. Your first step is to not let your inner voice talk you out of doing something. Instead, take some kind of action no matter how small that action may be.

Pushing Yourself to Overcome Challenges

Push yourself into taking action. This is the first step in refusing to be lazy! You also should be careful not to make emotional choices though. Emotional decisions are generally not thought through, and your desire to complete the task can fade rapidly. A perfect example of this is when you make a New Year’s Resolution. These resolutions are emotional and are often decisions that are made in haste. They can be impulsive, not thought through and not well planned.

Here’s an example of how to force yourself to take positive action: You have decided you are going to get up earlier each morning and go for a walk or get on your treadmill. Before you go to bed you set your alarm clock for 5:30 am. The buzzer goes off and even though you may hit the snooze button, you have set another alarm for 5.35 am. This second alarm is your ‘pushing’ mechanism. Maybe you’ve placed the second clock on the dresser across the bedroom so you have to force yourself to get out of bed. Now that you are awake, you decide you might as well get up and get moving.

You feel great once you have exercised. You feel energized and ready to face the day, and quite frankly, you are proud of yourself for keeping your word to you! Capture this feeling and remember it; then use it the next day when you are deciding whether to hit snooze or get up.

Complete Tasks on Time

You can also challenge yourself to begin completing tasks on time. This actually ties in with becoming less lazy and pushing yourself. Think of some small task that needs to be done around your home. It could be cleaning out a room or just organizing your desk.

Once you have decided on your task choose a time to do it and write it down; give yourself a time period to complete the task. You can set a reminder on your phone or schedule it on your calendar. When the time comes, your appointment with yourself that is, you want to make sure that you actually do your task.

If the task will take longer than you thought, you can set a time limit and work until your time is up. Why not use an alarm clock to remind you of the time? Try working for 25 minutes and then taking 5 minutes off. Once that buzzer goes off, stop and take a rest. Then congratulate yourself on working toward completing the task. If you feel energized, you can continue and complete the task or schedule another time to finish it.

We are all a work in progress. Admittedly, it’s a time of uncertainty, and many of us are worried and frightened. I believe it’s important to use this time for positive changes in our lives, and that means it’s in your best interest to refuse to be lazy.

Cheryl, this is a very timely article. Funny – you seem to be reading my mind. I was thinking about writing an article about making decisions about your use of time. It’s way too easy to let time pass you by with little thinking and nothing to show for it except a few extra pounds from mindless eating habits and binge watching Netflix!

Thank you – I’m enjoying reading your posts.
