Garlic And Your Immune System
Let’s talk about garlic and your immune system. Some people find garlic a bit pungent, and others love it! Regardless of your take on it, garlic is a very important herb you should be adding to your cooking or even eating raw, because of its many health benefits. It’s especially important when it comes to your immune system, and anything that supports your immune system now during our COVID-19 challenge is a good thing!
Garlic has many uses in cooking; it’s a great seasoning and adds a lot of flavor. Admittedly, it does have a pretty distinct scent to it. One of the most important things garlic does for your immune system is increase the number of white blood cells in your body.
This is important because these white blood cells are responsible for finding, targeting, and killing off foreign cells that carry disease. They’re your strongest defense against illness. Without an adequate number of them, your body can become overwhelmed by the infection. By eating garlic and boosting your number of white blood cells, you increase the chance they will be plentiful enough to target any disease before it really takes hold.
Another benefit garlic supports is that it improves your blood flow. This is important for a number of reasons. As your white blood cells circulate throughout your body, they’re on the lookout for anything they don’t recognize so that they can flag it as a threat and attack it. If your blood flow is better, your white blood cells have an easier time making it through your body on the lookout for disease.
Let’s talk about stress which we all are experiencing at the moment. It’s been well documented over the years that stress can contribute to a weakened immune system. Stress causes your body to release hormones (cortisol is among them) that render your immune system less effective, but fortunately garlic may change that. Garlic has been found to stop the release of stress hormones, making you feel less stressed and helping keep your immune system running strong.
The healthiest way to get the benefits you want out of garlic is to eat it raw. Understandably, many people aren’t too fond of this, because the smell and taste can be a bit overpowering. By cooking it you’re reducing that smell and taste a lot, but you also lose some of the benefits. If you’re trying to decide between freshly chopped garlic and just spooning it out of a jar of minced garlic, the health benefits of the freshly chopped version are so worth the effort!
