3 Steps Everyone Can Take to Reduce Chronic Inflammation
Do you know what the root cause of disease and premature aging is? It’s chronic inflammation, and the good news is you can do something to help control it. What follows is a list of 3 steps everyone can take to reduce chronic inflammation.
Before we get to those three steps, I want to give you a quick run-down on inflammation. There are two kinds of inflammation; one can kill you and one can cure you. The inflammation that can save your life is “acute inflammation”, and that occurs when you injure yourself or when your body is attacked by an infection. Your immune system cranks up into high gear and goes to work to save you. You may notice for example, swelling or redness if you have a cut or if you sprain your ankle. That’s acute inflammation. In a perfect world, once you’ve been saved by the acute inflammation, it cranks itself down again and is ready for the next injury.
The inflammation that will kill you slowly and make you old before your time is “chronic inflammation”. That occurs when your body lives on a slow burn of inflammation all the time. That inflammation never goes away. When you live in a constantly inflamed state and you are injured or become ill, your immune system still amps up to save you. The problem is the level of inflammation is then higher than it should be as your baseline was the level of chronic inflammation you are living with and not a lack of inflammation.
This is one of the main issues with Covid-19. When you live in a state of constant inflammation and contract Covid, your inflammation goes out of control and you’re more likely to become critically ill with the disease and succumb than you would be if you became ill sick with your brain and body not living in a constant state of inflammation.
So, our dilemma is: how do we reduce chronic inflammation so, if we contract Covid-19, we have a higher chance of fending it off, a better chance of survival?
I want to suggest three steps you can take today. They are simple, and I know physically you can do them. The challenge will be, how addicted are you to foods that do not serve your best health?
The three things you can do now:
Sugar – Sugar puts your body in an inflamed state quickly. It creates an acidic environment in your body. It’s a major contributing factor to chronic illnesses such as Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, cancer and depression just to name a few. Getting sugar off your plate and out of your life is one of the best things you can do for yourself today and going forward to ensure you live a long, healthy life.
Did you know that in centuries past, “getting the sugar” as T2D was referred to was reserved for the wealthy as the poorer populations couldn’t afford sugar. How times have changed.
Sugar is in just about everything you can buy in a store except fresh produce. I challenge you to find soup, crackers or chips that do not contain some name of a sweetener. By the way, if you’d like an alphabetized list of the 60+ names of sugar, please get it here.
Gluten – Gluten also contributes to inflammation. Some people are unable to process it at all and suffer with celiac disease. Others of us, me included, have what is termed NCGS, or Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity. These people, while not Celiac patients, have sensitivity to eating gluten and are advised to avoid it.
People who think they are unaffected by gluten may be interested in recent information showing links between gluten and amyloid plaques found in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia.
Processed foods – In general, any food you buy in a bag or a box is processed food. The whole “foodness” has been removed. To increase shelf life, preservatives are added, partially hydrogenated oils are used and the list of ingredients is a mile long. Many of those ingredients sound more like a chemistry lesson than a list of foods. The rule of thumb is to look for food that has very few ingredients.
In my doctor’s office, there was a sign that listed these three rules for choosing your food:
- Never eat anything with more than five ingredients
- Never eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food
- Never eat anything that won’t eventually rot
