10 Facts about Fat
Confused about fat? Who isn’t?? Don’t eat fat; do eat fat; don’t eat this fat, but that fat is good for you…I have a blog post to share (below) from one of the best functional medicine doctors with 10 facts about fat that will help you begin to understand.
I’m sorry to say I bought into the low fat/fat free craze of years ago and am trying to make up for it now by eating good, healthy fats.
Where do you turn to get the skinny on fat? I searched a few blogs online from people with good credentials and read blogs by Registered Dieticians and the like. Every one of them called out canola oil as a healthy fat. In fact, it was first on their list before olive, avocado or coconut oils!
Did you know: “Canola” stands for Canada Oil and comes from the rapeseed plant which is a member of the mustard family. While it was largely used in industry and had to be altered in flavor to use for consumption (it had a strong acid taste), the worst part is that years ago, Monsanto developed a GMO version of the rapeseed plant. Now, the majority of rapeseed is from GMO sources – thanks again Monsanto. How does that make it the healthiest oil to use?
Here’s a link to a blog posted a few days ago by one of my favorites, Dr. Mark Hyman. He gives a great overview of fats, good and bad, to help you begin to understand this very confusing subject.
Get the facts about fat. If you’re eating the right ones, you will better support your mental and physical health. I love to saute with avocado oil as it has a higher smoke point than olive oil has. I tend to use olive oil for salad and in soups when I’m not sauteing with higher heat.
