Dr. Mark Hyman on Sugar Addiction & Food Cravings

Dr. Mark Hyman on Sugar Addiction & Food Cravings

Anyone who knows me or who has followed my blog knows I am a huge fan of Dr. Mark Hyman.  He is the one person who really started me on the road to better health.

I first heard him speak on a PBS special that was based on his book, “The Blood Sugar Solution“.  My husband, Rob, and I had been trying to get off a couple of prescription drugs. Rob had been taking statins to control cholesterol, and I had been on and off anti-depressants for too many years.

What we learned in his book started us down a different path and helped us get off all prescription medication. Rob’s cholesterol levels are healthy and normal, and I have not struggled with depression in a year and a half.

I wanted to share a blog post with you that he wrote.  It’s about food addiction.  Dr. Hyman talks burger fries and shake_m01229about the genetics of pleasure and says: “In our brain, a little receptor, the dopamine receptor D2 (or DRD2 for short), must be activated or switched on for us to feel pleasure. The amino acid dopamine triggers this response. Sugar and other stimulating addictions increase dopamine in the short term.”

Here is a link to the article. It is so worth a few minutes of your time to read.

It makes me feel a lot better, even empowered, to understand why some of us struggle more than other with food cravings, especially cravings for sugar and carbohydrates.
