The 5 Second Rule
Do you worry about dirt and germs? I’ve long maintained that all this “kills 99% of germs” advertising is just getting us to expose ourselves to dangerous chemicals in the name of profit for a few giant companies! While it’s important to know how to clean safely, it’s also important to know which surfaces harbor the highest number of germs and bacteria. That’s what I want to share with you today via a wonderful article by one of my all time favorite experts, Dr. David Perlmutter. It’s based on the 5 second rule regarding food and if you drop it on the floor.
In this article, Dr. Perlmutter says, “They found that the kitchen floor was likely to harbor, on average, about three colonies persquare inch of coliform bacteria (2.57 to be exact). So there are some. But here’s the thing – that’s cleaner than both the refrigerator handle (5.37 colonies per square inch) and the kitchen counter (5.557 colonies per square inch).
We spend so much time worrying about what food might have picked up from the floor, but we don’t worry about touching the refrigerator. We also don’t seem as worried about food that touches the counter. But the counter is just as dirty, if not dirtier.”
Here a link so you can read the rest of this very interesting and enlightening article.
Come on people… we need some dirt around so we maintain our ability to fight off dirt and germs, but this article will let you know what you should be cleaning that you aren’t really paying attention to at the moment.
