It’s so inspiring when people who were resistant to eliminating processed food and to changing how they eat suddenly begin to get it.
Maybe it’s a family member they trust or a TV documentary they watch, or both, but whatever starts the ball rolling for someone… I just love it!
I have a friend who was probably the biggest “harrumpher” I know for the food and health information I share. I just keep sharing and gently suggesting, hoping to find a chink in her armor…
Recently, her daughter came home for a couple of weeks and has been cooking. The daughter is a healthy eating person and has been making the meals. My friend is eating healthier with smaller portions, less meat, and going back to the gym.
She told me this morning, she got on the scale and has lost two pounds! This is great for many reasons. First and foremost from my point of view is the fact that she’s not on a diet! She is just changing what and how much she eats. Secondly, it’s important because it’s not a huge fast weight drop. People don’t understand how they lose weight.
The big weight drop experienced when you first go on a diet isn’t fat that’s being burned; it’s water weight that is being lost. When people “plateau”, and they always do on a diet, then they are beginning to lose weight…burn fat. That is something that is not shared. Losing weight, fat that is, is a much slower process than simply eliminating water weight.
I don’t like the idea of dieting. When have you ever heard someone tell you they need to go on a diet and look happy and excited about it? In my opinion, and I admittedly have some pretty strong ones, the way to lose weight and keep it off is to change your eating lifestyle, not to diet.
You may not believe it now, but you can retrain your taste buds to like different foods and flavors, Believe me, and I speak from experience, if changing how and what you eat makes a huge improvement in your life and health, it will be easier than you think.
The processed food industry has studied us, and they know that loading food up with sugar, salt and fat makes us crave, buy and eat with reckless abandon “food” that makes them rich and makes us sick.
Don’t let them win.
