Natural Cough Medicine… Aren’t Lemons Amazing?

How to Handle a Cold… Make Your Own Natural Cough Medicine

Recently, in fact, currently, my husband came down with a really bad fluey-type of cold.  The aches, pains, headache, sinus stuff, and then it headed for his chest.  Landed there and decided to stay.

He developed a really bad cough that was so out of control he couldn’t sleep well and was exhausted from the coughing.  It was so bad and so constant he felt like he had done about two hundred crunches.  I remember my mother actually cracked a rib coughing with one bad cold she had, so we had to figure this out. Rob was beginning to sound like he was developing bronchitis.

The cough was so bad that we finally dragged out a bottle of over the counter cough medicine from the back of the bathroom closet.  Next thing I knew, Rob announced he read what was in it and had poured it down the drain.  I really was at a loss as I expected he would make some comprises with our clean eating and no drugs stance for a few days in order to avoid bronchitis and the inevitable drugs that would be forced upon him.

Wrong…

So, I hit the interwebs, and began looking for recipes for natural cough medicine.  Most of them seemed to involve the use of honey, but that was not an option for us.  Rob’s family has a history of diabetes, and I was diagnosed with low blood sugar many years ago, so, we are always watching our intake of sweets and avoiding our intake of foods that give you a glycemic bump… keeping them to a bare minimum or not at all.

I found a recipe for what we are now calling  our “Lemon Elixir”, and the basic recipe along with ingredients incorporated from reader’s comments has become our recipe.  The results were amazing; in fact, Rob’s improvement was so dramatic, that I couldn’t believe it myself.  It only took a few minutes to make the natural cough medicine and only took a few minutes for it to start taking effect.

In about 10 minutes while he was still drinking the mixture, the coughing began to subside.  The effect lasted most of the day, and in the evening he drank the remaining elixir to calm that evening throat tickle that seems happen when you have a cold and a cough.

Here’s the recipe.  It’s easy, delicious and works like magic!

  • Grated rind of one lemon
  • Juice of one lemon
  • 1 ½ cups of water
  • 1 tsp coconut oil (you can use butter if you prefer)
  • 1 ½ tsp xylitol
  • 1 TBSP of finely chopped fresh ginger
  • Fresh thyme (or dried if you don’t have fresh… I use lemon thyme from the garden)
  • Cinnamon stick

Simmer for about 5 minutes to allow the ingredients to infuse.  Whisk the mixture to evenly distribute the coconut oil, strain through a tea strainer or cheese cloth and pour into a mug.

Enjoy drinking your natural cough medicine and enjoy wondering where your cough went!
