How to Find Motivation to Lose Weight

It can be difficult to maintain motivation when you’re trying to lose weight. It’s easy to start off with enthusiasm and be excited about your goals. However, at a certain point the motivation and enthusiasm can wane especially once your weight loss begins to slow down or plateau. There are essentially three steps to finding your motivation and keeping it as you strive to live a healthier life.

  1. What is Your Reason for Losing Weight?

There are many reasons why someone may want to lose weight.  You may have had a health scare. You might have an event like a wedding, a reunion or a vacation that you want to look great for. wedding

You may simply be tired of your clothes feeling too tight, or maybe you realize that you’ll have more energy and vitality if you shed a few pounds.

Keep in mind your reason for losing weight needs to be one that resonates with you. Trying to lose weight because you think you should doesn’t usually work. Identifying your reason for wanting to lose weight will help you create a plan that supports you to succeed.

  1. What Will Make It Enjoyable?

The second component of finding and maintaining motivation to lose weight is to find activities that you enjoy. Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore, and healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring. When you’re enjoying the weight-loss process, you’re much more likely to stay excited about it and be motivated to stay on track with your healthier diet.

Think about exercise activities you might enjoy. If you enjoy dancing, for example, then a barre class or a fitness dance class may be perfect. Playing catch or badminton in your backyard can be easy, fun and a great source of exercise.

  1. Create a Support System

The third component of finding and maintaining motivation to lose weight is to create a support system. This means your environment supports you, the people in your life support you, and the tools you use support you. These tools can be things like health and fitness applications.

There are applications that connect you to online fitness communities and can help you stay engaged and active in your weight loss. There are also applications that help you track calories consumed and burned. You can connect mobile apps to monitoring devices to track your effort and intensity as well. There are even apps that will send you an exercise for the day, healthy recipes or information on great running, walking, and biking routes in your community.

There are fitness and health applications that help you find people to exercise with, applications that help you schedule your fitness classes and so much more. Creating systems that support you will help you stay motivated. Your support systems may be the most important component of maintaining motivation to lose weight!

  1. Hi Cheryl,

    I have found as I have gotten older that it is harder to lose weight and the weight just wants to stick, and stick in new places! I was trying to lose weight before attending a wedding but couldn’t keep up the motivation.

    Your post has reminded me what my real goal is – a better state of health and more energy. I know this will have a positive impact in all areas of my life.

  2. Cheryl, thanks for the tips on getting motivated to lose weight. My main thing is how much better I feel when I eat healthy. Then when I eat healthy, I lose weight. Lately,I have been off my focus for this. Your tips are helping me to get my focus back.

      Thanks again for letting me know my link wasn’t working for the Clearly Filtered Bottles. I could have sworn I checked that link.
