Epigenetics…what does it mean?
When I was studying to renew my Health Certification, I chose to study a book written by Dr. Jeffrey Bland titled “The Disease Delusion”. Dr. Bland is the “father” of functional medicine; functional medicine is medical practice or treatments that focus on optimal functioning of the body and its organs. It looks at how the organs and systems function together rather than isolating each organ or system for analysis and/or treatment as our current allopathic or traditional medicine does today. He talked about epigenetics, and I wanted to know…epigenetics…what does it mean?
Very simply put, epigenetics is the study of biological mechanisms that will switch genes on and off. Epigenetics refers to external modifications to DNA that turn genes “on” or “off.” These modifications do not alter the sequence of your DNA; instead, they affect how your cells “read” the genes.
I found this concept fascinating and empowering. In the purest sense of the definition, I felt it gave me choice and power over my gene pool. I did not have to be the inheritor of arthritis and dementia which run in my family. I had the potential, by changing what I eat, what I put on my skin, what products I use for cleaning, laundry etc. to drive my own bus as far as my health is concerned. That is huge!
“Epigenetics Is Reversible. With 20,000+ genes, what will be the result of the different combinations of genes being turned on or off? The possible arrangements are enormous! But if we could map every single cause and effect of the different combinations, and if we could reverse the gene’s state to keep the good while eliminating the bad… then we could theoretically* cure cancer, slow aging, stop obesity, and so much more.”
Isn’t it exciting to think that just because cancer, diabetes, depression or obesity runs in your family, you don’t have to sign up to suffer with it? I hope you’ll take a look at this. It’s a quick read, but very, very empowering!
